Signs of Revival | Past Present Future

Text: Nehemiah 8:1-12, Acts 17:26b
Summary: Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?...and grant us your salvation. Ps. 85:6-7
Things never happen the same way twice - Aslan in the Chronicles of Narnia (C.S. Lewis)
God gave Nehemiah the heart of Jesus for a devastated city and a devastated church within that city. After much prayer, repentance, work & worship - the walls of the city were rebuilt and the people launched their church. Estimated attendance for their launch service: nearly 50,000. Fairly impressive. But more impressive was that as the Scriptures were read, God enabled pastor Ezra to present their clear meaning, and the people responded with understanding. Revival then broke out, radically transforming the city.
Throughout church history there have been many documented revivals - from the early Apostolic churches, to the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century - to the Great Awakenings of the 18th & 19th century - to the 1970s Jesus People movement here in Vancouver. While each of these revivals occurred within different contexts (people, music, culture) - there were common elements that transcended their culture. Things like:: the reading, understanding & application of the Bible - the articulation of the Gospel vs religion - the power of prayer - and radical creativity in virtually every other area of the church (music, art, expression, language, etc). So as we look back upon the revival documented by Nehemiah - and review the history of revival in our city - lets look for common signs of Gods hand and learn to recognize them in our own day. I believe God has more revivals planned for our generation and our city. May our hearts & hands be ready for Gods next great awakening.
