Exchanging the truth & beauty of Jesus for...

Q.  Why do we so easily exchange the truth of Christmas for such cheap counterfeits?

This December, Reality will explore some of the big ideas of the 'holiday season' - HOPE | JOY | PEACE.

These ideas seem to transcent religion - being commonly held values for the devout & the deviant alike.  Christmas is a season for hope, joy & peace - right?   Peace, love & candycanes... Who wouldn't want in on that?  Depends on how you define hope, joy & peace...

We'll explore what is commonly understood by these ideas - the redemptive & the non - and contrast that with the fullest version presented by the person & work of Jesus.

Date: 12.19.10
Preacher: Dennis Wilkinson
Title: What Ralph Doesn't Have
Ralph is an atheist. I am a Christian, we both seem to be at peace, so what's the difference? What do I have when it comes to peace that Ralph doesn't? The Christian has peace with God, peace when pain comes, and peace experienced within the body of Christ. and these things makes all the difference in the world.

Key Passages:

Romans 5:1, 6-11

John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid and then later in

John 16:33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.

Col 3:15 -- And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body.

Title: HOPE | What are you settling for?

Most of the traditions often associated with Christmas from the trees, to gift-giving to mistletoe, to the date - have been ripped off from other cultures & traditions... some pre-dating the manger, shepherds & the midnight clear. In this sermon we'll look at the absurdity of putting Christ back into Christmas - since Christians are the ones that wedged him into a few pre-existing traditions in the first place. But well delve into the wonder of Grace & Truth come down in flesh and why celebrating Jesus - the hope of glory who inserted Himself into the dust of humanity - is indeed a cause worthy of Hp, Joy, & Peace. We'll explore how we too easily settle for cheap counterfeits to the true & wondrous HOPE of Christmas. May the reality of Jesus: his birth- life- message - mission - death - resurrection - glory be the centre of all we do over the holy-days. Merry Christmas, one and all. Jesus has come, for one and all.
