WHAT IS THE GOSPEL? (gospel reality)

Date: 2.22.09
Speaker: Kristian Martens
Passage: Romans 1:16, 1 Corinthians 1:18-25, 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, Galatians 1:6-8, Galatians 2:14, James 1:21, 1 Peter 1:23

Title: WHAT IS THE GOSPEL? (and why is it good news for our city)

The truth of the Gospel is the principle article of all Christian doctrine... Most necessary is it that we know this article well, teach it to others, and beat it into their heads continually. - Martin Luther

Summary: Good news. A joy-inducing report. Glad Tidings. The Gospel.

Christ-followers are often called 'Evangelicals' which simply means 'people of the Gospel'. And that is exactly what we should be. Reality Vancouver is a community that endeavors to be Gospel-centric in all that we do, for it is this Gospel that informs our identity, worship, community & mission. The Gospel is of first importance - for it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes (Rom 1:16).

The questions are:
But do we know the Gospel?
After it effects a one-time change - what then?
Is it something more?
What about the various competing ideas about the Gospel (eternal life, justification, kingdom)?
Is there only one Gospel - or multiple Gospels depicted in the Scriptures?
How, exactly, does the Gospel change us?
What are the enemies of the Gospel?
What is the Gospel response to our pluralistic, multi-cultural city?

Date: 2.15.09
Speaker: Kristian Martens
Passage: Jeremiah 29:4-7
Title: ITS ALL ABOUT JESUS: the city, the gospel & the absurdity of religion

Summary: As the first public gathering of the Reality Vancouver community we went back to the foundations of Christian faith & the motivation for Christian ministry. Essentially, our foundation, motivation, & message is Jesus - and its His story - found on every page of the Bible - that transforms, saves & sends us out as missionaries.
Despite the misconception that Jesus works best in the suburbs, or in rural communities, we find in the Bible and in human history that Christianity was strongest in urban environments. The reality is that Jesus loves the city because thats where the majority of His people live. Just because Vancouver is currently home to very few Christ-followers doesnt mean Jesus intends for it to stay that way.

The questions are:
- Do we love the city and, if so, how do we posture ourselves towards its people, culture & institutions?
- How do we function as a community within a community - allowing the Gospel to renew the social & spiritual culture?
- How do we avoid the pitfalls of religion & religious subculture while maintaining an authentic, vibrant & contagious faith?

Thats our challenge - and our call as a Jesus community in Metro Vancouver.

THE TIME HAS COME (pre-launch gathering)

Date: 2.08.09
Speaker: Kristian Martens
Passage: Mark 1:14-15
Title: THE TIME HAS COME: the decisive, strategic call of Jesus on this expression of His church.

Summary: Pre-Launch gathering. A reminder of Jesus' words as he called his disciples & sent them to preach the Gospel. In this sermon we also look the definition of success & our motivation - whether it's to be 'different than' (other churches, etc) or 'faithful to' Jesus & His Kingdom.
